MSC Chitra cargo ship seen in the Arabian Sea, off the Mumbai coast collided off with another cargo ship causing Mumbai oil spill spreading out from MSC Chitra as the ship damaged. As MSC Chitra had crashed into the St Kitts-registered MV Khalijia-III or two Panamanian cargo ships which has been collided off the Mumbai coast caused an oil spill from one of the vessels. The Mumbai oil spill out from MSC Chitra off Mumbai's coast has started hitting the shores, making the ship a major environmental hazard for Mumbai and its surrounding coastal areas. Five Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships and two helicopters have been pressed into service for checking the massive oil spill in the Mumbai harbour, around five km south of Mumbai

The Mumbai Port Trust has closed down its navigational channel for bigger ships as MSC Chitra tilted nearly 75 degrees and 250 of its 1,219 containers carrying hazardous chemicals fell into the sea. The Panamanian vessel had collided with St Kitts-flagged vessel Khalijia 3 km off the city's coast on August 7, 2010.

The official said that the authorities are making the best efforts to mitigate and minimise the damage to the sea due to the oil spill. “Containment and recovery of spilled oil in present position is not feasible because of the rocky surface and the prevailing weather and tidal conditions,” the official explained.

The ICG rescued all the 33 sailors from the two ships. The two vessels, loaded with containers of dry cargo, collided when one of them was attempting to berth at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), off Mumbai, around 9.45 a.m. Saturday, an ICG official said.

State environment minister Suresh Shetty described the situation as very serious. The Coast Guard, the Navy as also port officials have expressed inability to contain the spill as the ship is tilted. The oil has spread to a 2 km area around the ship and has already touched Awas village in Raigad. The slick was also seen near Uran and Elephanta. Chitra has 2,662 tonnes of fuel oil, 283.8 tonnes of diesel oil and 88,040 tons of lube oil.
