Saffron Terror/ Saffron Terrorism increasing warns Chidambaram

Posted: 25 Aug 2010 11:39 PM PDT

/ Saffron Terrorism increasing warns Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on August 25, 2010 and  cautioned the chiefs of State police and security and intelligence officials against continuing attempts to infiltrate militants into the country as well as the phenomenon of "saffron terrorism”. Chidambaram mentioned while reminding his audience the terror threat had not gone away. “There is no let up in the attempts to radicalise young men and women,” he said. "Besides, there is the recently uncovered phenomenon of saffron terrorism that has been implicated in many bomb blasts of the past. My advice to you is that we must remain ever vigilant and continue to build, at the central and State levels, our capacity in counter-terrorism,” he said.

Inaugurating a three-day conference of Directors-General and Inspectors-General of Police here, the Minister dwelt at length on the security scenario in the northeast region and Jammu and Kashmir and left wing extremism. There are five other cases where different probe agencies have either found some leads against Hindu extremist groups or suspected roles of such elements. Blasts in Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad (May 18, 2007), Ajmer (October 11, 2007), Malegaon in Maharashtra (September 8, 2006), Modasa in Gujarat and the one near Goa are such incidents.

The Mecca Masjid blast is with the CBI while Ajmer blast is being probed by ATS Rajasthan and Malegaon blasts by ATS Maharashtra. Blasts in Goa and Modasa are being investigated by the NIA. So far, probe agencies have found definite links of Hindu extremist groups only in three cases — Malegaon, Goa and Ajmer — and have made a few arrests.

The Minister regretted that despite the government urging the CPI(Maoist) to abjure violence and come for talks, there was no direct and credible response to the offer.

An Exhibition on Mother Teresa- Life, Spirituality and Message in were conducted recently in different countries like INDIA, ITALY, USA, PHILIPPINES, ALBANIA, GERMANY, MEXICO, AUSTRIA, FRANCE, SPAIN. Mother Teresa died on 5 September 1997, following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Mother Teresa's birthday, there will be celebrations the world over. From St. Peter's Cathedral in Belfast, Ireland to the Hutchinson Metro Center in the Bronx, blue and white (the colors of the Missionaries of Charity) will shine brightly. Billboards in Times Square will shine blue and nearby Hoboken will feature posters of Mother Teresa in several venues. Hundreds of devotees gathered in West Bengal to celebrate Mother Teresa's 100th birthday. A special Mass was held at the cathedral ahead of her birthday, which falls on Wednesday.

Albanian born Mother Teresa made Kolkata her home and dedicated her life to the service of poor and destitute children. Her wisdom and nobility spread far and wide and was adopted by many. By the 1970s, she was internationally famed as a humanitarian and advocate for the poor and helpless, due in part to a documentary and book Something Beautiful for God by Malcolm Muggeridge. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 for her humanitarian work. Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity continued to expand, and at the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children’s and family counselling programs, orphanages, and schools.

She has been praised by many individuals, governments and organizations; however, she has also faced a diverse range of criticism. These include objections by various individuals and groups, including Christopher Hitchens, Michael Parenti, Aroup Chatterjee, Vishva Hindu Parishad, against the proselytizing focus of her work including a strong stance against contraception and abortion, a belief in the spiritual goodness of poverty and alleged baptisms of the dying. Medical journals also criticised the standard of medical care in her hospices and concerns were raised about the opaque nature in which donated money was spent.

Mother Teresa came to India in 1929 at the age of 18 and took up teaching and became an Indian citizen in 1948. The nun started working in slums and later set up her Missionaries of Charity, which was approved by the Vatican in 1950. The organization now runs more than 500 charity homes in over 100 countries. Mother Teresa received several national and international awards for social service during her lifetime.
