Murthy in an Event in Delhi said that Infosys will get his suitable successor well before his retirement next year, when he turns 65. “We have a nominations committee. Jeffrey Lehman (an Infosys board member and Cornell University professor) is the chairman of that. Certainly, he and his committee will come up with a successor in time so that I can retire on August 20, 2011.

The nominations committee oversees the company’s nomination process for the top level management.The most likely to be made amongst Kris Gopalakrishnan (54), currently the CEO of Infosys, K V Kamath (62) and Deepak M Satwalekar (61), both of who are on the board of the company. Gopalakrishnan’s term as CEO will end only in October 2002.

The role of an executive chairman is to preside over board meetings and be responsible for company governance functions. Murthy was executive chairman earlier and on turning 60 he became non-executive chairman.

The chairman will not oversee day-to-day activities of the company and he will not be responsible for any big business decisions the company takes. However, the CEO consults him before any big decision is taken. “In the case of Murthy, being the founder chairman, he had a disproportionate influence on the decisions of the company. However, the new chairman is unlikely to enjoy such clout,” said a senior official in Infosys. Kamath, who is from Mangalore, is now non-executive chairman of ICICI Bank. Satwalekar is CEO of HDFC Standard Life Insurance.

Murthy’s succession issue comes at a time when another Indian big business house, the Tatas, has begun the search for a successor to its chief Ratan Tata, who is to retire in December 2012.

UK scientists warn of worldwide spread of Superbug first let us know What is Superbug ?. In an article published online in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases today on August 11, 2010, doctors reported finding a new gene, called NDM-1. The gene alters bacteria, allowing them to become resistant to nearly all known antibiotics. It has been seen largely in E. coli bacteria, the most common cause of urinary tract infections, and on DNA structures that can be easily copied and passed onto other types of bacteria.

Dr David Livermore, one of the researchers and who works for the UK’s Health Protection Agency (HPA), said: “The NDM-1 problem is likely to get progressively worse in the foreseeable future. “The potential for wider international spread and for NDM-1 to become endemic worldwide are clear and frightening.” Infections have already been passed from patient to patient in UK hospitals. Researchers say the way to stop NDM-1 is to identify and isolate any patients who are infected.

“Hospitals need to ensure they continue to provide good infection control to prevent any spread, consider whether patients have recently been treated abroad and send samples to HPA for testing.

The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great, and coordinated international surveillance is needed,” the authors wrote. Aside from the U.K., the resistant gene has also been detected in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, the U.S. and Sweden. The researchers said that since many Americans and Europeans travel to India and Pakistan for elective procedures like cosmetic surgery, it was likely the superbug would spread worldwide.

The spread of these multi-resistant bacteria merits very close monitoring,” wrote Johann Pitout of the division of microbiology at the University of Calgary, Canada, in an accompanying commentary. Pitout called for international surveillance of the bacteria, particularly in countries that actively promote medical tourism. The consequences will be serious if family doctors have to treat infections caused by these multi-resistant bacteria on a daily basis.”

Infosys a Chop Shop called by US Senator New York Charles E Schumer while criticising companies outsourcing highly paid American jobs. US Senator New York Charles E Schumer has described Indian IT major Infosys as a “chop shop”, a place where stolen cars are dismantled and parts sold separately during discussions on the Border Security Bill, a $600-million emergency package aimed at strengthening security along the porous Mexican border on August 5, 2010.

Schumer on the Border Security Bill on the Senate floor said that the emergency border funds will be paid for by assessing fees on foreign companies known as chop shops that outsource good, high-paying American technology jobs to lower wage, temporary immigrant workers from other countries like Infosys. The comments made during the discussion that Infosys a Chop Shop are posted on the Senate website.

Schumer also pointed out the bill would not affect the high-tech companies such as Intel or Microsoft that play by the rules and recruit workers in America. The $600 million-spending bill approved by the Senate would see significant hike in application fees for H-1B and L1 visas, which are most sought after by Indian IT professionals. Infosys has thousands of employees in the US. For the three months ended June 30, the company had raked in 67.3 per cent of its total revenues from North America.

Funds for the bill will be raised through visa fee hikes that US Senate aides say would affect India’s Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies, Wipro and Mahindra Satyam.The US Senate approved the border security measures last week and the sponsor, New York Democrat Charles Schumer, said the bill was also targeted a small group of companies that he said exploited US law to import workers from abroad.

Infosys said the visa fee hike would over time be passed on to customers as it was an industry wide issue. Its chief executive Senapathy Gopalakrishnan said the new fees would in the immediate future have a minimal impact on India’s second largest outsourcer.

The proposed bill would hike the visa fee to $2,000 per application on those entities that have less than 50 per cent of their employees as US citizens.
