Mubarak says he will step down when the next president is elected; the United States is urging him to accelerate his departure.

The fighting started in Cairo's Tahrir Square and is spreading as more and more people join in the fighting.

An estimated one million people are involved in the fighting and a correspondent for Al Jazeera estimated the crowd at two million people.

Protests turned violent today as supporters of Hosni Mubarak fought with anti-government protesters.

Every weapon imaginable from bats and sticks to shoes and rocks and even fists are being used.

One person was seen with a crude spear made from a long stick with a knife attached to the end of it.

At first soldiers and police stood by, but after a while the police and army presence moved to the background, leaving the protesters to fight among themselves.
