Honda Motor Company grabs fourth position in USA

    Posted: 22 Apr 2010 04:22 PM PDT

Honda Motor Company Limited (TYO:7267) continues its winning streak in the US auto market in the month of August. The Japanese auto-maker passed Chrysler LLC and grabbed the fourth position in terms of car sales in USA. Toyota Motor Corporation (TYO: 7203) and Honda Motor Company saw less sales drop compared to their US counter parts: Ford, GM and Chrysler. Bloomberg reports:

Tokyo-based Honda may keep the No. 4 spot as a sluggish economy and fuel prices crimp demand for the light trucks that make up more than half of Chrysler’s volume. Honda’s 2008 U.S. sales are up 1.7 percent, while Chrysler’s are down 24 percent.

“Honda and Nissan will likely be the only big automakers that post positive numbers in the U.S. for the calendar year,” said Jesse Toprak, director of industry analysis for automotive research firm.

Till August, Honda Motor company sold 1.083 million auto mobiles in the U.S. Since 1994, the second largest Japanese automaker have been observing increasing sales. The Honda Fit subcompact is the flagship model of the company. It also became the best selling car in Japan last month.

Interview of Shoeb Ahmed Masud Marketing Director Business Automation Ltd.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2010 04:08 AM PDT

Shoeb Ahmed Masud is one of the leading entrepreneurs in the software industry of Bangladesh. He is the Marketing Director of Business Automation Ltd. Business Automation Ltd. is a large software company in Dhaka. It has worked with some large multi-national companies and developed products for them. Business Automation Ltd. has received "Best IT Use Award" at BASIS Softexpo 2004, 2005 and 2007.

I went to the office of Business Automation Ltd. the other day and Shoeb Ahmed Masud was kind enough to give me an interview. Excerpts from the interview here:

Razib Ahmed: How is Bangladesh doing in ICT Export?

Shoeb Ahmed Masud: Bangladesh has not started ICT export in large scale but some software and ITES companies are doing very well. Our companies are exporting software and ITES in many countries of the world. I think that we have more potential in ITES in relation to the overall HR and other factors. India has also earning the majority from ITES, not from software development.

Razib Ahmed: What about your company? Are you involved with ICT Export?

Shoeb Ahmed Masud: No, at this moment, we are not doing any export. From our visits in the international fairs, we felt that we need to build reference projects before going to international market. So, we worked on developing the quality and skill of our manpower. Now we are planning to go for export market in next year. going to start exporting software from next year (2009).

Razib Ahmed: What should Bangladeshi companies do to become successful in foreign markets?

Shoeb Ahmed Masud: I think that for our companies, the important thing is to be focused. First of all, they have to be focused on a specific market. For example, BASIS is always searching for new markets for Bangladeshi software and ITES companies but it may not be viable for a company to run after all the markets. The next thing, they should be focused about the skill set they like to offer.

Razib Ahmed: You were a member of the executive committee of BASIS. What is BASIS doing in helping ICT export?

Shoeb Ahmed Masud: BASIS has taken several steps to promote software and ITES export. For example, BASIS is actively searching for new markets for Bangladeshi companies. BASIS is also arranging for its members to participate in different software expos in different parts of the world. It is also working with the government to solve the problems related to the export sector. BASIS is also involved in developing manpower for the software industry. It arranges some industry-specific training programs.

Razib Ahmed: At this moment, many young people in Bangladesh are doing outsourcing related works through internet. However, their earning is not getting counted in our software export. What should be done?

Shoeb Ahmed Masud: You are right. There are companies with small group of programmers who are working in export but I am not sure whether their sales proceeds are coming as export. Even income of the informal work in freelance sites by individual persons are coming but not sure whether counted in software export classification. The government should sit with BASIS, EPB and banks and try to figure out the way to count the software export income properly.

Razib Ahmed: For many years, the software companies suffered from inter bandwidth price. What is the condition now?

Shoeb Ahmed Masud: Internet bandwidth price has decreased a lot in this year after the long persuasion with Government & BTRC by BASIS. But I wish that BTRC will give more effort to monitor the quality and tariff of bandwidth for the end customer.

Razib Ahmed: Tell us something about your company "Business Automation Ltd."

Shoeb Ahmed Masud: Business Automation Ltd. was formed in December 1998. Since 2000, we have focused for the software development, primarily developed products and solutions for the local market.

We acted like a pioneer in some fields in Bangladesh. For example, we developed products related to mobile based solutions, SMS-based applications, IVR, call accounting and voice mail etc. For details, you can visit our website www.batworld.com
