Chingam 1 2010 or Chingam 1 or Chingam month 1 or the first day of Chingam month is the Malayalam New Year Day. In Malayalam calendar, New Year almanac (Kolla varsham) begins on Chingam 1. Chingam 1 2010 date is today on August 17. As per Malayalam calendar, Chingam 1 in 2010-2011 marks the beginning of Kollavarsham 1186 of Malayalam year. Chingam 1 is also known as Simha Sankranti. Onam or Thiruvonam is the biggest festival celebrated in Chingam month and it is also the biggest of all Kerala festivals. Malayalam calendar is the only calendar which celebrated its New Year in rainy season i.e. in August on which all will send Malayalam New Year Chingam 1 cards or Onam Greetings or Onam Pictures photos to their friends, family members and beloved ones.

Onam is the harvest festival in the Indian state of Kerala which is going to celebrate on August 23, 2010. It falls during the first month of the Malayalam calendar which is Chingam 1 2010 or Chingam 1 (August–September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements of Kerala’s culture and tradition. Intricate flower carpets, elaborate banquet lunch, snake boat races and the kaikottukali dance all play a part in the festival. Onam is a secular festival and close to heart of all Malayalees and is celebrated with equal fervor in all parts of Kerala. For this festival, people wear new clothes: men wear a shirt and mundu, and women wear mundu and a golden bordered shoulder drape called nariathu.

Onam Festival Significance:

Onam is an ancient festival which still survives in the Modern times. Kerals’s rice harvest festival and the festival of rain flowers which fell on the Malayalam month of Chingam celebrated the annual visit from pathalam of King Maveli. Onam is unique since king Maveli is reverred by people of Kerala from prehistory.

According to the legend, Kerala witnessed its golden era during the reign of King Mahabali. Everybody in the state was happy and prosperous and the king was highly regarded by his subjects. He was that much highly regarded among the subjects that even the Gods under Indra became jealous of Mahabali, they approached Mahavishnu claiming that Mahabali is a threat to them. Mahavishnu disguising himself as a little boy appeared before him and tricked him to Pathalam, the Underworld. However, impressed by his good character, Mahavishnu granted him a boon that he could annually visit his people with whom he was so attached.

It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.

The rich cultural heritage of Kerala comes out in its best form and spirit during the ten day long festival. The most impressive part of Onam celebration is the grand feast called Onasadya, prepared on Thiruonam. It is a nine course meal consisting of 11 to 13 essential dishes. Onasadya is served on banana leaves and people sit on a mat laid on the floor to have the meal.

Another enchanting feature of Onam is Vallamkali, the Snake Boat Race, held on the river Pampa. It is a colourful sight to watch the decorated boat oared by hundreds of boatmen amidst chanting of songs and cheering by spectators.

There is also a tradition to play games, collectively called Onakalikal, on Onam. Men go in for rigorous sports like Talappanthukali (played with a ball), Ambeyyal (Archery), Kutukutu and combats called Kayyankali and Attakalam. Women indulge in cultural activities. They make intricately designed flower mats called, Pookalam in the front courtyard of the house to welcome King Mahabali. Kaikotti kali and Thumbi Thullal are two graceful dances performed by women on Onam. Folk performances like Kummatti kali and Pulikali add to the zest of celebrations.

Mahabali’s rule is considered the golden era of Kerala. The following song is often sung over Onam in English:
When Maveli, our King, ruled the land,
All the people had equality.
And people were joyful and merry;
They were all free from harm.
There was neither anxiety nor sickness,
Death of the children was never even heard of,
There were no lies,
There was neither theft nor deceit,
And no one was false in speech either.
Measures and weights were right;
No one cheated or wronged his neighbor.
When Maveli, our King, ruled the land,
All the people formed one casteless race.

Madani : PDP chief Abdul Nazir Madani arrested in 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case which has been occurred on 25 July 2008 in Bangalore, India were made live in www.manoramanews.com which was an malayala manorama news channel. The Bangalore Police today on August 17, 2010 (Tuesday) arrested People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Abdul Nasser Madani in connection with his role in the 2008 blast in the city. Just as Madani was leaving his residence-cum-party headquarters to surrender at the court, a contingent of Karnataka and Kerala police arrived and took him into custody. The arrest comes after a warrant was issued by a local court against Abdul Nazir Madani. Madani is the key accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial bombings. A Bangalore court June 15 issued an arrest warrant against Madani. The warrant has been extended four times and Tuesday was the last date for Karnataka Police to bring him before the court.

Madani, the 31st accused in the Bangalore bomb blast case, has denied his involvement in the bombing in which in which two people were killed and 20 injured. Earlier, an emotionally charged Madani told reporters that it was a “conspiracy hatched politically”. He reiterated that he was innocent.

The PDP leader, while addressing the media in Kollam, said that he was not involved in Bangalore blasts. He also appealed to party workers to refrain from causing any communal tension.

The states of Karnataka and Kerala have been involved in a bitter war of words over Karnataka Home Minister VS Acharya's comment that Kerala had not been cooperating on Madani’s arrest. On the other hand Kerala claims that state has been extending all help to Karnataka Police team that is in Kollam to arrest Madani.

In India (Ind) vs Srilanka (Sl) Live Match: Suraj Randiv no ball deined Virender Sehwag to score a century. Suraj Randiv off-spinner bowled a big no-ball and left the Indian batsman Virender Sehwag 99 not out from scoring a century. But Suraj Randiv no ball could not stop Virender Sehwag from steering India to a comfortable six-wicket win in the tri-series.

India needed just five runs to win the 171-run target and Sehwag just one run to get his hundred when Lankan spinner Suraj Randiv came in to bowl 35th over of the Indian innings. The off-spinner gave four byes in the first ball, which kept a little low, bowled two dot balls, and then bowled a big no-ball, which Sehwag smashed out of ground. Since it was a no-ball, no runs were added to Sehwag’s score and he remained not out on 99.

Indian opener Virender Sehwag on Tuesday said Sri Lankan off-spinner Suraj Randiv, who denied him a hundred in last night's ODI tri-series match by deliberately bowling a no ball, has apologised for his conduct.

It looked a deliberate no-ball since Randiv’s back foot was where bowlers normally have their front foot while bowling.

Sehwag’s 99 came off 100 balls with 11 fours and two sixes and Dhoni also supported him well with his 38-ball knock and had two fours.

Not the one to mince words, Sehwag had yesterday lashed out at Randiv for deliberately bowling a no-ball and depriving him of a well deserved century and said such behaviour was unacceptable.

“If there is a player on 99, it does not mean that you bowl a no-ball and give away four byes. That has no place in good cricket,” Sehwag said at the post-match press conference.

Sehwag said he was sure the no-ball was bowled to deny him the century.

“Why should I look at the video, it was done deliberately. Randiv has not bowled no-balls in one-dayers also. When I was in 99 why was a no-ball bowled. It was not a small margin no-ball but one foot long. I don`t know whether the captain was consulted or someone else was consulted,” he said.

Sehwag said the Lankans have done this to Sachin Tendulkar also in the past.

“Sri Lankans did it with Sachin (Tendulkar) also when he was on 99 in the Cuttack match. That happens in cricket. Bowlers try to do that when batsmen are on 99.”
