GTL became the World’s Largest independent Tower company after Merger with Rinfratel (A subsidiary of Reliance Communications )

On Sunday 27.06.10:  Mr. Anil Ambani from R-Infratel agreed to merge its 50,000-tower portfolio with Manoj Tirodkar, GTL Infrastructure Ltd., with an assurance of close to 75000 tenancies from both Aircel and Reliance Com in the coming 10-15 years  and after this merger GTL Infrastructure Ltd., became the largest independent tower company in the World with over 86,000 telecom towers, 125,000 tenancies from over 10 operators.

The Historic deal has main three modules and expected to be done over the next six months:-

  1. GTL Infrastructure Ltd will pay around Rs 6,750 crore in cash and also plans to raise funds for this through private equity deal—A source said.
  2. GTL will sop up a part of RCom's debt, around Rs 11,250 crore.
  3. Now RCom will give free equity i.e. two and three GTL shares to their every shareholders in the merged unit.

This agreement could reduce debt weight from RCom shoulders and will move RCom towards a debt free Group. It made GTL to world's largest Tower Company to enhance its total tower count from 32,000 to 82,000.

"This is in line with the company's plans of taking its tower business to 1 lakh by 2012," the source said.
