Gorkha leader Madan Tamang Stabbed: Darjeeling News Posted: 21 May 2010 02:41 AM PDT
“The GJM’s goons have committed the murder. GJM is a fascist party, which does not want any opposition in the hills. They are opposed to a democratic atmosphere prevailing in the hills.” On hearing about the attack on Tamang, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee convened an emergency meeting at the state secretariat Writers’ Buildings here and directed police and administrative officials to take all measures to keep the situation under control. Tamang, a vocal opponent of the GJM, had earlier levelled corruption charges against its chief Bimal Gurung. The GJM had then threatened to banish him from the hills. Rajiv Gandhi Assassination: Nation pays homage to Rajiv Gandhi on his 19th death anniversary Posted: 21 May 2010 02:16 AM PDT Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu during a poll campaign. It was one of the first uses of suicide bombing for the purposes of political terror so the day is also observed as Anti-Terrorism Day. The Nation today paid homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 19th death anniversary. President Pratibha Patil, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the departed leader’s wife and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were among the first to pay floral tributes to the late leader at his memorial ‘Veer Bhumi’ in New Delhi. The objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is to wean away the youth from the terrorist/ violence cult by highlighting the suffering of the common people and showing how it is prejudicial to the national interest. These objectives are aimed to be achieved by organizing debates/discussions in schools, colleges and universities; holding of symposia/seminars and lectures on the dangers of terrorism and violence and a determined and sustained drive to bring about a mass awakening against terrorism and violence. Voluntary organizations, social and cultural bodies are organising their own programmes through lectures, talks, discussions, musical and recitation programmes and cultural functions. Mass education programmes are held to highlight the ill effects of violence and terrorism. Anti-terrorism/anti-violence pledge will be taken in all Government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions. No tags for this post.Related posts |

Organised every four years, they are the third-largest multi-sport event in the world, after the Summer Olympic Games and the Asian Games. Commonwealth Games (CWG) Tickets available and selling from June 1 from Rs. 50 “Around 1.7 million tickets will be sold for the Games starting from October 3. These tickets be initially available only from a dedicated call centre, the Commonwealth Games 2010 website and a few select outlets,”. OC is also planning to make the tickets available in more than 50 outlets of Central Bank and Hero Honda within 10-15 days of the launch of ticket sale. For those hoping to catch the action live at the stadia, the low pricing of tickets is an added incentive. OC officials refused to reveal the different price slabs for the remaining tickets. As per information they would be available in four slabs, with options for group bookings. The ticket prices would also be different for the various sporting events, with the opening and closing ceremonies at a separate price slab altogether. OC sources said the maximum demand is expected to be for the opening and closing ceremonies, billed as a cultural extravaganza. Both ceremonies will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, which has a seating capacity of 64,000 spectators. Ticket sales, though, are primarily expected to be through the call centre set up specifically for the purpose. The tickets bought online by spectators would be changed to physical tickets at the venue before the event. At present, the OC is expecting around 1 lakh international tourists. The number of domestic tourists is expected to also go up in October for the Commonwealth Games. Tags: Commonwealth Games, CWG 2010, CWG TicketsRelated posts |
