Haj Committee of India is a committee in India formed under Haj Committee Act 2002, for making arrangements for the pilgrimage of Muslims of India for Haj. A special Hajj passport is issued for this purpose. Mohammad Owais is the present CEO and its head office is in Mumbai.

The first formal meeting of the Haj committee was held in 1927 in Bombay, headed by the then Commissioner of Police Mr. D. Healy. Till the year 1994 sea route was the major way of traveling to Mecca, starting from Mumbai. With the increase in air transport in the year 1995 sea route was completetly replaced by air route. Further embarkment points were added a presently includes Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Calicut, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Srinagar, Nagpur, Patna, Jaipur, Guwahati and Aurangabad.

5,576 from out of 16,588 aspirants from the state were selected for Haj pilgrimage through lottery system by the state Haj Committee on Monday May 24, 2010.

The process was initiated by home minister, Dr V S Acharya and Wakf and minority welfare minister, Prof Mumtaz Ali Khan, at a programme organized in the banquet hall of the Vidhan Soudha here, in the presence of religious leaders. The number of Haj pilgrims for each state is decided on the basis of the quota allotted by the Central Haj Committee. This quota was again distributed among the districts, based on the district-wise population of Muslims.

All the applicants from Koppal, Yadagiri and Haveri districts got chosen, as the number of applications received from them was less than the quotas allotted to them.

The committee has also chosen 279 persons additionally, as a possible replacement for those applicants who may not take the pilgrimage at the last minute. 234 applicants, who have been making applications since the last three years, were chosen directly. Haj Committee president, Mohammed Ghouse Basha Ashrafi, said that all the chosen pilgrims should pay Rs 30,700 to the Haj Committee by July 6 and also submit their international passports before August 31.

Air India Strike: Air India Employees (crew, engineers) on flash strike

Posted: 25 May 2010 04:43 AM PDT

Air India Strike or Air India Employees (crew, engineers) on flash strike going on today May 25, 2010 Tuesday for better working conditions, quicker disbursement of salaries and apparently a gag order on speaking out on the Mangalore plane crash.

At least seven domestic departures were cancelled owing to the flash strike. The striking employees were also protesting the alleged poor working conditions of the cabin crew.

An Air Corporation Employees Union spokesperson said the strike was against delay in salary payment and poor condition of the cabin crew on the flights.

An investigation team of Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recovered Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) commonly known as Black Box, the most vital source of information, from the crash site of Air India Express aircraft at Mangalore.

Three days after the air crash in Mangalore that killed 158 people, the main part of the missing black box of the Dubai-Mangalore Air India flight was found.

Out of the 166 people inside the aircraft, eight escaped miraculously. But some of the survivors are in critical condition.

Earlier on Saturday, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said: "Preliminary reports say that it (the plane) overshot the runway, unable to control the speed and since there was less spillover area, the crash occurred.”

"Mangalore runway does not have much of run over area unfortunately. Apparently it has not been able to stop despite the normal spillover area. Preliminary findings say except for touchdown all other things appeared to be normal. The runway was also in order. This runway was meeting all friction quotients. It was only made operational in 2006."

As per the Montreal Convention to which India is a signatory, the families of the deceased could be paid up to $160,000 and the injured will not only be treated but also compensated.
